Build a premarket watchlist: from a gap ranking to a source-linked observation record

Build a US-stock premarket watchlist using gap percentage, comparable volume windows, spreads, source timestamps and execution-status checks.

A trader reads a notebook beside two monitors before the workday, seen from an office doorway in morning light.

A movers ranking answers which stocks are changing. A watchlist should explain why a stock remains under observation and what to verify next. A longer list is not necessarily better, especially when a small premarket print changes the last price while news, share counts and execution conditions remain unresolved.

Fix the observation time and universe

Market times here use ET. For example, preserve a 09:20 ET snapshot with security type, price range, market universe, data timestamp and delay status. This is an observation example, not a universal routine, and differs from the article’s Shanghai publication time.

After finding candidates in FennEdge Scanner, distinguish common shares, warrants, units and ETFs. Save the query criteria so later additions and removals remain explainable.

Gap percentage depends on the reference price

Assume the prior regular-session close was $3.00 and the observed premarket price at 09:20 was $3.60. The gap on that basis is ($3.60 − $3.00)/$3.00 = 20%. Using an after-hours print instead changes the result. Reconcile reference prices and corporate actions before comparing rankings.

Also check whether $3.60 is a recent print or an old last price. Preserve Bid/Ask and observation time. See Gap Up and Gap Down; the Top Gappers calendar offers historical context where available, not a replacement for current quotes.

Compare volume windows before calling a ratio RVOL

If premarket volume is 350,000 shares and average full-day volume is 1.4 million, their ratio is 0.25. That compares different windows; it is not automatically same-time relative volume. For premarket activity, inspect available comparable historical windows and document sample size and coverage.

If only a full-day baseline is available, retain it with that qualification. An unfinished day versus completed historical days does not by itself show weak activity. Our Volume and Relative Volume guide explains the distinction. Note splits, halts and exceptional days affecting the sample.

Spread changes the meaning of otherwise similar movers

Assume a $3.54 bid and $3.64 ask: a $0.10 spread, or about 2.79% of the $3.59 midpoint. A purely arithmetic 1,000-share purchase at that ask followed by a sale at that bid has a $100 spread difference before fees, slippage and price changes. This does not guarantee either execution.

FINRA’s extended-hours guidance identifies potential lower liquidity, wider spreads and broker-specific order restrictions. Activity does not establish your broker’s support for that instrument, session and order. Separate research from execution using Bid/Ask/Spread and order types.

Attach original sources and an explicit research status

StatusUseful record
Activity observedPrice and volume changed at the stated observation time
Source verifiedOriginal announcement or filing, publication time and event
Further checking neededUnresolved issuance stage, quantities or terms
Currently unassessableStale data, unclear identity or missing material evidence

Use FennEdge Research with the stock-move research workflow to trace original sources. Keep event, filing and repost times separate. A financing ceiling is not completed sales, and an old disclosure does not become new financing because it was reposted.

Where relevant, verify halts, SSR order conditions and Locate with timestamps. These address different constraints and cannot substitute for one another.

Create a record that can be updated and reviewed

In FennEdge Desk, a note might read: “09:20 ET; common shares; 20% gap versus prior regular close; 350k premarket shares; $3.54/$3.64 quotes; original company source and time; issuance quantity unresolved.” Give numbers their conventions and list unknowns directly.

Refresh when information, the session or execution conditions change. Preserve important earlier versions and concrete reasons for retaining, deferring or removing a candidate. An unexplained move can remain a research question without an invented catalyst.

FAQ: How many stocks? A manageable number you can verify; no universal optimum. Does the list remain fixed after the open? Recheck changing prices, evidence and availability instead of carrying premarket assumptions forward unchanged.
